R100 (1 star): Japanese comic turned director Hitoshi Matsumoto explores the nature of desire through the world of kink, told through the eyes of a mild-mannered salesman who joins a club where he can be humiliated by a succession of dominatrixes. Shot through a sepia-tinged lens with flashes of pale pastels added later, it’s a film designed to satirize modern Japan and to shock. (One particular scene will raise hackles.) Occasionally edifying, mostly unsettling. B.D.
