Groundwater at a nuclear power station has been found to contain a radioactive substance above agreed levels.

EDF Energy, which owns and operates Dungeness B in Kent, said the tritium was found during routine sampling.

The energy firm said there was no risk to the public or its workers from the leak, which had been contained.

つまり、定期的なサンプリング調査で、規定値以上のトリチウムが地下水から見つかった。ダンジュネス原発の所有者のEDFエナジー（福島第一原発でいう「東電」）は、今回の放射能漏れ（放射性物質漏れ）で公衆および従業員へのリスクはまったくないとしている。漏れは既に止められているとも。

The Environment Agency said it and the Office for Nuclear Regulation had been informed. EDF is investigating the source of the tritium.

EDF said the tritium had been identified and isolated to one small area and the environmental impact was negligible.

原子力規制庁には（EDFエナジーから）報告があったと環境省は述べている。また、どこからトリチウムが出たのかについては、EDFが調査している。

EDFではトリチウムは特定され、1か所の狭い区域に隔離されており（＝ほかに浸み出してはいない）、環境への影響は無視できる程度だと述べている。

“Boreholes on the station boundary have been checked and tritium levels have been confirmed to be at background levels – this means no more than is naturally occurring,” a statement from the energy firm said.

It said the local water company had confirmed the local water system was unaffected.

EDF said it was still rectifying the problem, but the tritium levels had already been reduced by more than half.

EDFは、問題はまだ修正中 (rectifying) であるが、トリチウムのレベルは既に半分以上下がっているとしている。

Routine tests on boreholes drilled close to the Dungeness B plant found traces of tritium measuring more than seven times the agreed level.

But plant owners EDF Energy have reassured residents that it is unlikely that contaminated water has seeped into the local domestic supply.

Although the substance, a radioactive variant of hydrogen, can increase the risk of cancer, according to the Environmental Protection Agency in the US, it is considered one of the least dangerous nuclear waste products.

Normal levels of tritium, agreed with the Environment Agency and measured in Becquerels, are usually considered to be anything under 100 per litre of water.

But the tests in the boreholes close to Dungeness B showed levels of 760.

The Environment Agency and water authorities have now been informed and an investigation is under way at the power station.

Readings taken in September and December 2012 showed levels of tritium at 850 Becquerels per litre (Bq/l). The Environment Agency investigation level is 100Bq/l.
